The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. It runs from the lower back, through the buttock, and down through the leg. Sciatic pain is pain that travels down this path through your body. Sciatica will usually affect just one side of your body, but we have seen cases where the pain inflicts in both legs. Regardless, the pain can be excruciating and may cause disruptions in your normal daily functions. Some of sciatica symptoms include:

  • Sudden, severe pain in your low back or leg
  • Muscle weakness in your leg
  • Numbness or tingling in your leg
  • Pain lessens when you lay down
  • Pain around the mid-buttock area
  • Pins and needles sensation in the leg
  • Pain when bending
  • Trouble controlling your bowels or bladder

Sciatic nerve pain typically is indicative of an underlying problem, like a herniated disc. Other problems could be a degenerative disc disease, obesity, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, spinal stenosis, or pregnancy. The pain induced under sciatica can be severe, but luckily, most cases resolve easily.
